Beschreibung:

Lepidodendron Carboniferous Period Coal Mine, Letcher County, Kentucky Certainly one of the largest Lepidodendron specimens to come to market, this giant fern tree portion tells the story of the formation of Earth's coal deposits. A major inhabitant of the coal-forest swamps, which existed 320 million years ago, Lepidodendron is also known as the scale tree, for its diamond-shaped scales, which are seen remarkably well-preserved in the present specimen. Living in an environment with plentiful water, warmth and nutrients, the fast-growing plant reached heights of 60 - 100 feet after only a few years. It is no wonder that trees such as these produced the amazing amount of biomass resulting in the rich coal deposits which humankind relies upon today. This remarkable specimen displays, on both sides, very sharply preserved surface bark. Where the bark was worn off during the fossilization process, a dimpling pattern is seen. Measures 44 x 16 x 3/8 1/4in
