Beschreibung:

Circa 1856-early 1860's. Straight back blade approximately 5/16” thick, with sharpened false edge, marked "DUFI[LHO] N.ORL[EANS]". Coffin form checkered rosewood handle scales with three raised nickel silver pins, shaped iron guard. Original leather sheath with nickel silver tip and throat. Blade in excellent condition with sharpening scratches and some scattered pits, sheath in superb condition (fits a bit tight). Ex. Logan Sewell, Mike Worley collections. Publications: “The Antique Bowie Knife Book” by Adams, Voyles, Moss (1990), pp.80-81 (forthcoming) “A Sure Defense: The Bowie Knife in America” by William B. Worthen and Mark D. Zalesky (2017), pp.176-177 Public Exhibits: Exhibited at Historic Arkansas Museum’s “A Sure Defense: The Bowie Knife in America” exhibit, Dec 2013 - June 2014. Surgical instrument maker Alexandre Henri Dufilho’s shop was located in New Orleans, near the corner of Custom House and Royal streets in the French Quarter. Considered the premier maker of Bowies and push daggers in the Crescent City, Dufilho worked there from 1856 to 1867. This absolutely massive Bowie knife was carried by Dr. Lunsford P.
