Beschreibung:

Lot of 2. Two documents related to the care of Massachusetts-area Indians and other indigent individuals. The first document catalogs lists of expenses related to care of several named patients as overseen by doctors and "Mr. Henry Davis, Guardian Dudley Indians." Approx. 7.5 x 11.75 in., 4pp (pages 3/4 partial page only), 1828-1829. A historical book of Dudley descendants describes Henry Davis (1788-1868) as "a prosperous farmer of Dudley; selectman; and guardian under the State of the Dudley Indians." Second document, 8.5 x 13.5 in., 2pp, January 2, 1820. An accounting for "Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the Town of Middleborough" for numerous expenses, including "To supplies furnished Benjamin Simons an Indian man & his daughter Abigail Simons," "To the Burying & Funeral charges of John Barkman an Indian man," and to supplies furnished "John O Brine" an Irishman and Revolutionary War veteran who came from the State of New York and "fell in to distress in Middleborough...." Two fascinating documents reflecting the socio-economic realities for some of nineteenth-century New England's less fortunate and under-represented populations. Condition: Dudley, MA document missing approx. half of page 3/4, with modern adhesive repairs, tears along folds, and toning. Middleborough, MA document also with modern adhesive repairs to tears at folds and scattered soil and toning.
