MASON AND DIXON SURVEY – The London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post. London: Sold by J. Wilkie, 4 August 1763. The birth of the Mason-Dixon Line: a rare mention of the Mason and Dixon Survey in a London newspaper. The fifth page of the issue observes that “Lord Baltimore, Proprietary of Maryland, and Messrs. Penn Proprietaries of Pennsylvania, have appointed Mr. Mason and Mr. Dickson, two eminent mathematicians, to settle the bounds of their respective settlements in those colonies, and put a final issue to a dispute which has subsisted on that head ever since 1693.” It would take Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon five years to complete the survey which firmly demarcated the boundaries of Pennsylvania, Maryland and, following independence, what would become the State of Delaware. Over time, the line took on a much larger meaning, becoming the cultural boundary between the North and the South. Eight pages, folio (271 x 206mm).
