Mary, Queen of Scots--Brian Cave Manuscript accounts, entitled "The Accompte of Bryan Cave Esquire appoynted by [...] William Baron of Burghley [...] and Sir Frauncis Walsingham to receause disburse and laye out diverse and sondrye somes of money for the Chardges of Diettes aswell of Ladie Mary late Queene of Scottes as also of the righte honorable Sir Raphe Sadleyr [...] appoynted Governor of the said Queene of Scottes at the severall Castles of wingfelde and Tutburye [...] for lxxviii [78] dayes begone the xviii [18]th of December in the xxvii [27]th yeare of the Raigne [1584]" providing a detailed record of monies received and disbursed, with payments for a wide range of foodstuffs, from bread, eggs, meats and fish (ling, cod, salmon, stockfish, eel, herring, sprats), to spices and more exotic luxuries (olives, capers, almonds, figs, marmalade, and comfits), wine (Gascon, sack, and Muscadelle), other households and stable expenses, and other costs including salaries of soldiers and other staff, and charges "of the Remove of the Quene of Scottes from wyngfeld to the castle of Tutbury", amounting to a total of £1,337 14s 9 1⁄2 d, drawn up by professional scribes in two duplicate copies, each five parchment membranes, c.1585, endorsed, dust-staiing, wear and tear at exposed edges AN INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF THE IMPRISONED MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS. The exiled Scottish Queen had by this time been a prisoner in England for 17 years and had recently been transferred from the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury to Sir Ralph Sadler, who was under instruction to keep her under closer supervision than had hitherto been the case. During the period covered by these accounts she was transferred from Wingfield Manor to more secure lodging at Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire - the costs of which included an overnight stay in Derby (with tips to local innkeepers) and 61s. 6d "for makinge the wayes betwene wyngfeld & Tutbury and a Bridge for the Queenes Coach". These accounts give a vivid impression of the logistics and practicalities involved in maintaining a Queen, even in reduced circumstances. A group of closely related papers, including letters from Queen Elizabeth to Ralph Sadler, was sold in these rooms in 2010 (Hesketh Collection, 7 December 2010, lot 11).
