MARY I, Queen of England (1553-1558)]. Document, with secretarial signature, addressed to her officers of the law, 'Otelandes', 18 June 1554, on vellum, one membrane, 205 x 260 mm , 15 lines written in brown ink, secretarial signature in the upper margin, signed in the lower margin by William Petre, papered seal (occasional stains, tiny scorchmarks touching 4 words), inlaid. A warrant addressed to the Queen's officers in England and at Calais, instructing them to allow free passage to Nicholas Taphoren, 'gentelman of the towne of Hertogenbosch in the countrie of Brabant...to departe this our Realme with the parties thereof beyonde the Sea'. Sir William Petre, the counter-signer of the warrant, was the Queen's Secretary of State. The Palace of Oatlands in Surrey, one of the minor royal residences, had been much favoured by Henry VIII. The Venetian ambassador recorded a few days earlier that the Queen was going there on her way to await the arrival of Philip II of Spain, her intended husband, at Winchester.
