MARVEL TALES Nos. 124, 129 and 130 * Lot of Three Comic Books Publisher: Atlas [Indicia: Marvel Comics, Inc.] Date Published: June 1954-January 1955 Description: #124: G/VG (3.0). Spine stress, 1" split at bottom spine, top staple pulled, top corner of front and back covers chipped, corner creases, a few small chips to back cover, pancilled distributor's mark to back cover ("N 4/7"), 2" tear to one page. Cream pages, light tan edges. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 3.5 sold for $141 in 12/21. #129: VG/Fine (5.0). Mild spine stress, cover a bit off-center with excess white at spine, mild edge nicks and handling wear, mild handling soil to back cover, pencilled distributor's mark to back cover ("B 10/8"). Cream to off-white pages. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 4.5 sold for $193 in 3/18. #130: G/VG (3.0). Spine roll, spine stress, reading crease near spine, bindery crease parallel to the top of "TALES," staple rust, moderate handling wear but no chips or tears. Off-white pages. GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $297 in 7/22. Covers and art: Harry Anderson, Joe Maneely, Russ Heath, John Forte, George Roussos, Sy Moskowitz, Syd Greene, Ross Andru, Vince Coletta, Howie Post, Ed Winiarsky, Tony Mortellaro, Vic Carrabotta, Paul Hodge, Mort Lawrence. Atlas's flagship horror title ends its pre-Code run with covers by three of the company's top talents: Anderson, Maneely, and Heath. Maneely's cover is no great shakes, but Anderson and Heath make up for it with strong efforts, getting in a few final chills before the Comics Code clampdown. Vic Carrabotta's "Tornado" in ish #130 has a splash swiped from Johnny Craig's "Till Death" from Vault of Horror #28 (Dec.-Jan., 1953), with a twister substituted for Craig's zombie bride. Note: A copy of EC Classics #6, reprinting Vault of Horror #28, is included with the lot. A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200.
