MARTINEZ, Crisostomo (1638-1694). [ Osteology and Myology ]. Complete suite of 2 large engraved folding plates. Paris, n.d. [ca late 18th century].
MARTINEZ, Crisostomo (1638-1694). [ Osteology and Myology ]. Complete suite of 2 large engraved folding plates. Paris, n.d. [ca late 18th century]. Osteology plate (703 x 528 mm), sheet (804 x 588 mm). Myology plate (685 x 520 mm) sheet (825 x 590 mm). Bound with the plates in 20th-century quarter morocco and marbled boards, upper cover with a red morocco lettering-piece, spine gilt-lettered. Provenance : from the collection of Dean Edell. Extremely rare examples, probably printed at the end of the eighteenth century, of the two magnificent plates drawn and engraved at Paris between 1686 and 1689 by the little-known Spanish artist and anatomist, Chrisotomo Martinez. They are among the largest and most dramatic anatomical plates ever produced. In addition to the beauty of the overall composition, the osteological plate includes microscopic detail since Martinez was one of the earliest anatomists to study human bones through the microscope. These appear to be a late 18th century reissue of plates originally executed and issued in 1689 and 1692 in the seventeenth century. "We are reminded of Leonardo's term corpo transparent , which was however developed farther by Martinez, since his figures, unlike Leonardo's, did not rely on cross-sections." (Roberts & Tomlinson p. 281). Choulant-Frank pp. 259-260; Cazort, Kornell, Roberts, The Ingenious Machine of Nature: Four Centuries of Art and Anatomy (1996) p. 179.
