London: [printed by Harjette & Savill for] John Turrill, 1834. 8vo (187 x 115 mm). Half-title, 2pp. advertisement at the end. Additional lithographic title after Dudley Costello and J. Cruise, printed in colors and finished by hand, 10 hand-coloured lithographs, each cut to the edge of the image and mounted in imitation of a watercolor (3 by John Martin 1 each by M'Clise, Etty, Haydon, Franklin and others), each plate colored 'under the direction of Charles Simpson' and faced by a thick tissue guard leaf decoratively printed in light brown, 1 wood-engraved tailpiece. Original plum-colored velvet, the covers with an overall arabesque design blocked in blind, the flat spine similarly blocked in gilt with a design incorporating the title, brass clasp, moiré cream endpapers, g.e. Condition : occasional light spotting; rebacked with original spine laid down. the fourth edition of montgomery's 'messiah' but the first to include john martin's illustrations. This work was first published in 1832, but the present edition is now the only seriously collectable edition, celebrated for the three lithographic plates ('The Temptation', 'The Sermon on the Mount' and 'The Remorse of Judas') by John Martin These plates are amongst the very few examples of Martin's book work that were issued hand-colored.
