Dietrich and Arlen had known each other for at least a decade before this photograph was inscribed and the two have been romantically linked. Dietrich starred in the 1944 MGM film Kismet , with music by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg and recorded Arlen and Johnny Mercer's classic "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" for her 1954 album Love Songs . In December 1953, Dietrich made her cabaret début at the Sahara Hotel's Congo Room in Las Vegas, where she reportedly earned a staggering $30,000 per week for a three week stand. The shows were a great success, breaking previous Las Vegas attendance records, and Dietrich rotated a series of revealing gowns by designer Jean Louis of which she said "The only thing underneath the $8,000 'revue costume' was a gaiter belt to hold the stockings, period."
