MARKHAM, Gervase (1568?-1637). Markham's Master-Piece revived: containing all Knowledge belonging to the Smith, Farrier or Horse-Leach. London: Andrew Clark for Thomas Passenger, 1675. 4° (192 x 139mm). Engraved frontispiece with accompanying leaf 'The Mind or Meaning of the Frontispiece', folding woodcut plate depicting a horse, 4 full-page woodcuts, one folding, 3 showing the nervous system and skeleton of a horse and the other a farrier's instruments, 5 small woodcut illustrations. (Many quires lightly browned.) Contemporary red Turkey by [?]Samuel Mearne, gilt cypher of Charles II in 5 panels of spine, the title in gilt in the sixth, each panel within a border à la Du Seuil, double gilt fillet round sides, gilt edges (minor defect on lower cover). Provenance : Charles II. CONTEMPORARY TURKEY BINDING FOR CHARLES II, POSSIBLY BY SAMUEL MEARNE The cypher closely resembles that used by Mearne on a Bible and Book of Common Prayer; see Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings (London, 1974), plates 14 & 15. This is the eleventh edition of Markham's last substantial work on horses, published only three years after Cavelarice owing, as he states in the preface, to 'the ouer hastie greedinesse of a self-hurting Stationer, and the confusion of many Printers (one poore book [of Cavelarice ] being mangled into diuers hands)'. Although of no practical use today, the Master-Piece does enjoy the distinction of being the first veterinary manual in English to be acknowledged as a standard work on the subject, a position it maintained for a long time. An abridgement was published in Birmingham, 'for the use of practical farriers', as late as 1883. Poynter 20.11; Wing M-663.
