“David vainqueur de Goliath”. A patinated bronze figure of David holding a sword standing with one foot on the head of Goliath, round base with Hebrew word for “David” inscribed on front. Signed 'A. Mercié, no. 8' and marked 'F. Barbedienne fondeur, Paris' and stamped 'Reduciton Mecanique Breveté'. Late 19th century. H. 92 cm. The original David was sculpted in 1872, commissioned by the French state. Mercie's use of the David and Goliath imagery suggests to the French people that even after war, one day they shall return victorious. The sculpture was first on display at the Musée du Luxembourg and can now be seen at the Musée d'Orsay. The sculpture became so popular in its time that six sizes were cast by Barbedienne.
