Marianne. Grand hebdomadaire littéraire illustré. Year E. Berl. Paris, Gallimard, (incl. in parts as issued, num. photomontage ills. by MARINUS (= M.J. KJELDGAARD) and caricatural ills. by J.B. ALDEBERT, FRICK, H.P. GASSIER and P. ORDUET, large folio. - Years some marginal duststaining; otherwise fine. Year brittle, duststained and/ or dam. along horizontal fold. = No. rare large run of this leftist-pacifist weekly, featuring a large number of biting photomontages by the Danish caricaturist Marinus Jakob Kjeldgaard (, working in Paris under the name of Marinus. His photomontages are praised for their close similarity to real photos, since every portrayed person is meticulously fitted in their new, satiric context. Published at the same address as La Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF) - Gallimard's most important literary magazine - the editors of Marianne easily contracted major writers of the time. These issues of Marianne contain literary essays and short stories by i.a. Henry de Montherlant, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, Roger Martin du Gard and Georges Duhamel, mainly appearing for the first time in print. The frontpage of the first issue, featuring articles devoted to domestic affairs and opinions, was illustrated by a large anonymous satyrical photomontage caricature, and this remained the same until publication was ceased in his monograph Marinus & Marianne. Photomontages satiriques (, Gunner Byskov identifies Marinus as the maker of this first caricature. This first one was followed by no less than caricatures by Marinus. On the eve of the Second World War, Marianne was forced to temper its opinion on foreign politics, but this didn't mean Marinus was silenced. On the contrary, his most harsh caricatures were devoted to the peace negotiations between Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and Chamberlain, the risk of war and the war itself. Much of the quality of Marinus' work is gained from the time he invested in finding a perfect fitting head for the caricature he had in mind. For example, when a photomontage featuring Hitler was to be made, Marinus had the possession of over two thousand portraits of the Führer. Hence, we see Hitler playing cards with Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin as the heads of the statue of Laocöon and his son, baby Hitler being fed by Stalin, Hitler as a painter, etc. etc. Byskov (p. states that Marinus' photomontages can be divided into four groups: composed out of existing photos; taken in the studios of Marianne, altered for use as a caricature; composed out of existing works of art and composed out of existing moviestills. The large number of issues of Marianne present in this lot contain fine examples of each of these genres. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE IX. Call for price
