(Maria Anne, unlawful wife of George IV by a marriage invalid under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, 1756-1837) Four autograph copy letters to George IV, as Prince Regent, 13pp., sm. 4to, various paper stocks (watermarks dated 1805 and 1811), one letter dated 15 August 1814, mostly relating to the pursuance of her pension from the prince, and referring to their marriage, "...the memorable event of our Union ... in the year /85/ under circumstances which made [corrected to rendered] you the only person in this world while life endured that I could ever look up to for protection...", her personal standing with the prince, "I have reason to believe Sir that your ear has been frequently assailed by malignant incriminations against me - I have been accus'd of entering into Cabal's against yr. RH & doing you all the mischief in my power... you ought to know me better Sir", a letter on behalf of William Anderson Groom of the Stables to the Prince Regent, "I will... briefly state that poor Anderson is come here in such a state of mind as having been ordered to quit his apartments at Carlton House& the disgrace he feels attach'd to it is almost more than his mind can bear, after a faithfull & attach'd service to you of two and thirty years...", the cost of building her house at Brighton, "... for tho' we have now been married three & twenty years I never at any period solicited for an Increase of Income...", and support for the "proper education and maintenance of my beloved Child"; folds, with a wrapper ("7 | Letters sealed by the Executors March 31 1837 | G H | from Mrs Fitzherbert to HRH the Prince of Wales"), with remains of black wax seal impression. *** "The memorable event of our Union." - Maria Fitzherbert to George IV on their unlawful marriage. The "beloved child" referred to in the correspondence is Mary (Minney) Seymour, the daughter of Lord Hugh and Lady Horatia Seymour, whom she had virtually adopted in 1801. After a court battle Minney stayed with her until she married in 1825, Colonel George Dawson, the second son of John Dawson first earl of Portarlington. William Anderson began as helper and hack-groom to George IV, when Prince of Wales, from 1788 to 1800, but he was appointed head groom in 1804 and finally Groom of the Stables in 1812. Anderson appears in several paintings by Stubbs of the prince's horses.
