Rome: 1810. 4 volumes in 8, comprising: three 4° text volumes in 6 (296 x 220mm) and two 2° atlas volumes (660 x 470mm). Engraved portrait, folding plate of facsimile manuscript, and 8 head-pieces engraved by Pietro Fontana 104 double-page uncut engraved plates. (Light scattered spotting and offsetting to plates, plate XXIV lightly creased, last three plates in each atlas volume with heavy staining in places, occasional faint marginal spotting and soiling to text.) Text vols bound in modern blue quarter morocco, top edges gilt, atlas vols in ?publisher's original limp pasteboard portfolios, printed paper labels at head of spines, titles in ink manuscript in a contemporary hand to upper covers, leather ties, contained in a matching blue morocco-backed box (atlas vols lightly rubbed with some small repairs and with stains to lower covers). Provenance : deleted title-stamps. Francesco de Marchi initially served Alessandro de Medici, and then worked for 42 years for Margherita d'Austria. When Margherita married Ottavio Farnese he started serving the Papal court in Rome where he had the chance to meet artists and scientists coming to participate in the great urban works of the city. In 1542 and 1548 he took part in the decision on how to build the protective walls surrounding Rome. In 1810, as testament to the greatness of his work, the architect Luigi Marini edited this reprint of Trattato di architettura militare . The present copy was dedicated to the 'Maestá di Napoleone I'. The plates, 'magnificamente incisi' (DBI), were engraved in 1805 and 1808 by G.B. Cipriani and P. Ruga. (8)
