Beschreibung:

MARCHESINUS, Johannes (b. ca. 1300). Mammotrectus super Bibliam . [Strassburg: Printer of Henricus Ariminensis type 1 (Heinrich Eggestein?), ca 1474]. Median 2 o (394 x 290 mm). Collation : [1 4 ; 2-8 1 0 9 6 10-15 1 0 16 6 17 8 ]. 154 leaves, the first two leaves and final leaf blank. 47 lines, double column. Gothic type: 1:120, using the virgula for commas only on 2/1r. Large initials on fos. 1 r and 2 r supplied in red and blue, Lombard initials (some incomplete), paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, one headings rubricated, some initial spaces with manuscript guide-letters. (Some leaves lightly browned, otherwise very fine.) CHAINED BINDING: contemporary German blind-tooled dark calf over wooden boards, covers with large panels with intersecting fillets, at center small lettered "IHS" stamp ( Schwenke-Sammlung 282:105, Eberhardsklausen I) borders with repeated rosette tool ( Schwenke-Sammlung 264:406), lettered tools "Jesus Maria" ( Schwenke-Sammlung Schrift 282:105) and "IHS" (as above), and panels with Kopfstempel tool ( Schwenke-Sammlung 149:13), brass clasp (rebacked, corners repaired, somewhat dried, rubbed, one clasp lacking). A monastic binding from the Eberhardsklausen I workshop, WITH EARLY CHAIN ATTACHED TO TOP OF LOWER COVER (staple, swivel, 7 links, ring). Pastedowns: vellum pastedowns from an early (11th-century?) litugical manuscript, containing musical notation in an early form. Provenance : Treves, Public Library (inscription dated "1802" on front blank) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London) -- donated to SMS 9 December 1947. Third edition, after those of Mainz and Beromünster (Goff M-232, M-233), both dated 1470. Although the present edition is often dated ca 1472 in reference works, its Galliziani Seal paper stock more likely dates it to ca 1474. The same paper stock was used in at least three Royal folio editions (Goff B-537, J-82, T-214) printed in Basel not after 1474. Books printed in the Ariminensis type 1 are now associated with Heinrich Eggestein. At least three of them have printed registers of quire incipits, as do many of Eggestein's books. An edition of Bartholomaeus de Chaim, Interrogatorium seu confessionale printed in Animinensis type 1 (Goff B-155) has a quire register printed in Eggestein's types 2 and 5, and an Eggestein edition of Ludolph of Saxony (Goff L-337) uses Ariminensis type 1 as a heading type (see Doheny I, Christie's New York, 22 October 1987, lot 19). The Mammotrectus was a very popular guide to understanding the text of the Bible, written by Johannes Marchesinus, a Franciscan friar from Reggio d'Emilia, near Modena. It was composed about 1466 as an exposition of Biblical phrases and the prologues of St. Jerome to the Vulgate. It also contains two tracts on orthography and accents, one on Church feasts and festivals, and another on the rules of the Friars. Its popularity is evidenced in the many 15th-century editions of the work: Hain enumerates some twenty-four incunable editions. Goldschmidt notes, "Eberhardsklausen was founded in 1449 by a simple vintner called Everard and recognised by the archbishops of Treves in 1456; it was a great place of pilgrimage to a miraculous madonna discovered by the founder. It joined the Windesheim Congregation before 1464. In the chronicle of the monastery [Augustinian], by William of Berncastel, we find a mention of F. Johannes Lysure (died 1493) as a 'maturus et modestus ligator librorum'" (Goldschmidt, I, p. 165, note for pl. 37). AN EXTREMELY FINE TALL COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY CHAINED BINDING. BMC I, 78 (IC. 884; 152 leaves, not calling for two preliminary blanks in first quire of collation); BSB-Ink. M-155; CIBN M-119; HC *10552; Ohly 14; Pr 320; Goff M-234.
