MARCHESE, Annibale. Tragedie Cristiane. Naples: Felice Mosca, 1729. 2 volumes in one, 8 o (210 x 146 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 2 titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, 12 engraved plates, 20 leaves of sheet music printed on both sides, numerous engraved initials, head-pieces and tail-pieces (some light spotting, dampstaining, and browning). Contemporary brown goatskin, border of quadruple gilt fillet surrounding a central compartment also in quadruple gilt fillet and with ornamental corner tools with acorns, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, black morocco lettering-piece in one, ornamental tool with acorn design in others, edges and turn-ins gilt, top and bottom edges gauffered and gilt with floral and leaf design, fore-edge gilt and gauffered with a central rococco scrolling leaf cartouche, the edges opening to reveal a FORE-EDGE PAINTING INCORPORATING THE FLORAL CARTOUCHE and with floral designs surrounding it, the center of the cartouche reading "Prospiciente Deo," a lower cartouche reading "Si faveat coelum, bene surculus arbore crescet: Si mihi TV faveas, sic EGO MAGNUS ero," with monogram signature; modern slip case (corners and extremities lightly rubbed, a few pin-sized holes on spine, hinges just split).
