Title: Map of the Mining District of California by Wm. A. Jackson Author: Jackson, William A. Place: New York Publisher: Theodore A. Mudge Date: 1850 Description: Lithographed map. Lithographed by Lambert & Lane. 44.5x44.3 cm (17½x17"), folding into original thin leather covers 14.8.8 cm (5½x3½"), with 12 pp. text "Appendix to Jackson's Map of the Mining District of California." First Edition, second issue of the map, on lighter weight paper with some additions. Very rare first edition of Jackson's important and influential map of the mineral regions of California, stretching from the Mariposa River in the south to Reading's Ranch in the north, and encompassing the San Francisco Bay Area. Gary Kurutz describes the map in some detail in California 49, of which this is map 31: "Jackson's map must be regarded as one of the best to cartographically describe the frenzy of the California Gold Rush. It stretches from the forks of the Feather River in the north to 'Rich Veins of Gold in Quartz' and the Mariposa River in the South, and records the great growth of mining in the first year of the gold rush. Captain Jackson, a mining engineer who had personally explored the region, delineated the major mining centers of 1849 and the roads and trails leading to this auriferous territory. His map included symbols or 'Explanation' for cities or towns, ranches, Indian villages, and 'Workings for Gold." For the latter designation, Jackson drew in scores of these 'workings' along the rivers and forks of the Sierra foothills, and for the first time, those in the northern region. To assist gold hunters, Jackson thoughtfully accompanied this folded map with a text of twelve pages... Dated 30 December 1849, the text describes cities and towns, gives a general account of the mines, and presents useful advise to the miner..." Only a handful of copies of the first edition of the map, in either issue, are known to exist - Warren Heckrotte states "Heaston, Cat 10, determined that there were only 3 complete copies known. A collector in the city (D. Volkman) has the JH-B/Heaston copy. Kurutz describes Yale copy which has printed wrappers. I count five copies: Yale; LC; Streeter; JH-B/ Heaston copy; and mine." As to the provenance of the present copy, Mr. Heckrotte relates: "According to seller this map was bought in SF in 1850, taken to Hawaii and remained there until recent times when it was brought back here, went on the market and I bought it." Provenance: K. Harrison, 5/91 References: W-GR 161 ( Rep ). Streeter 2637 ( Rep in part ). K-CGR 358a; he reproduces cover of Yale copy which has printed wrappers. All other copies have leather covered folder. Phillips A Descriptive List of Maps of California and San Francisco up to 1865 no. 119. California 49, map 31 (Rep). Lot Amendments Condition: A bit of wear to covers, which are split in two along spine; some foxing to text, which is loose; map with some browning where attached into the folder, a few small separations at folds; very good overall. Item number: 265060
