Title: Map of the [Mi]ning District of [C]alifornia by Wm. A. Jackson Author: Jackson, William A. Place: [New York] Publisher: Date: 1850 Description: Lithographed map. Originally 44.5x44.3 cm (17½x17"), now missing portions at left and bottom and to the neat lines at top and right to measure 42.5x38.4 cm. (16¾x15"). First Edition, first issue, on heavier weight paper Exceedingly rare first issue of William A. Jackson's seminal map of the California Gold Region, noted by Gary Kurutz as "as one of the best to cartographically describe the frenzy of the California Gold Rush. It stretches from the forks of the Feather River in the north to 'Rich Veins of Gold in Quartz' and the Mariposa River in the South, and records the great growth of mining in the first year of the gold rush." This copy of the map has a very interesting feature. On the upper Yuba there is a small square drawn, indicating a location, and the name I.M. Wright. Bancroft's Pioneer Register lists a Wright, initials not specified, who was mining on the Yuba at this time. So, possibly this is a map owned by a forty-niner miner. This first issue may be differentiated from the nearly equally rare second issue by being on heavier weight paper, and by the absence of the notation regarding quicksilver mines to the south of San Francisco. Warren Heckrotte is of the opinion, based on extensive research, that the Library of Congress is perhaps the only other copy of the first issue extant, though he allows that the Yale copy might possibly be a first issue ("should check"). The present copy is defective, with left and bottom missing portions, as indicated above, apparently having split off where folded; this incurs loss of MI and leading edges of N in mining and C in California and loss of "Trinity River" along river. The loss at bottom is essentially border and imprint. The important detail portion of the gold region is not affected. Old folds conform to the folder size, which is not present, and neither is the text. Provenance: K. Harrison, 5/91 References: W-GR 161 ( Rep 2nd state ). Streeter 2637 2nd state.( Rep in part ). K-CGR 358a; he reproduces cover of Yale copy that has printed wrappers. All other copies have leather covered folder. Phillips A Descriptive List of Maps of California and San Francisco up to 1865 no. 119. California 49, map 31 (Rep 2nd issue). Lot Amendments Condition: Missing portion as noted, 5" split along a fold with minimal repair on verso; very good. Item number: 265061
