Place: [Albany, NY] Publisher: Date: 1859 Description: 211 pp. Large folding lithograph map; folding plan. (8vo) 23x14.5 cm (9x5¾") original blindstamped green cloth, lettered in gilt. Cover title reads: "Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the City of New York." First Edition. New York Senate Document No. 49 An important report on the public health efforts with Viele's topographical map of the lower portion of the island, from the battery to 80th street. Roadways shown, along with a portion of central park as well several of the city's smaller parks, Union Square, Madison Square, Tompkins Square etc. An early precursor to Viele's later topographical maps of the island's sanitary works. The folding plan offers an "Improved Sanitary Arrangement of Receiving Basins and Dumping Stations." No copies of the map or report appear in recent auction records. Sabin 54647. Lot Amendments Condition: Ex-library from the New Jersey Historical Society, with their bookplate, stamps and deaccessioned markings, map not marked. Spine sunned; short closed tear at bound edge of map; near fine. Item number: 264845
