Beschreibung:

8pp, inked manuscript document, with a Lakeside watermark on each page, attached with an old straight pin. After consulting with Andersonville National Historic Site's Cultural Resource Specialist, Alan Marsh, the consignor and Mr. Marsh determined that the papers could be the original notes describing Thomas O'Dea's lithographs of Andersonville Prison, which presently hang in the museum at Andersonville. O'Dea, who served in Co. E, of the 16th Maine Infantry and survived his confinement at Andersonville, decided to draw a picture of the stockade to present a true picture of the prison, and his depiction became very well known. Although this manuscript is not signed, it has been discovered that no other individual has published such a document, and O'Dea put forth a publication in 1887 titled History of O'Dea's Famous Picture of Andersonville Prison, As it Appeared August 1st, 1864, When it Contained 35,000 Prisoners of War, which features language that is almost identical to that included in this manuscript account. Thus, it is certainly possible that this was penned in O'Dea's hand.
