Beschreibung:

Manuscript journal, approx. 180 pp. (4to) 33x19 cm (13x8"), quarter calf and marbled boards. Manuscript journal attributed to the eminent poet, critic, and editor Richard Henry Stoddard (1825-1903). His principal works include "Abraham Lincoln, An Horatian Ode," "Songs of Summer," and "The Book of the East and Other Poems." He also served as a literary reviewer and editor for a number of New York newspapers and magazines, becoming important as a leading figure in New York literary circles in the late 19th century. His wife Elizabeth was a novelist and poet, and their house was a leading gathering place for writers and artists in the last 30 years of the 19th century. The present volume dates from the early 1850s to the mid 1860s and comprises about 180 pages of fastidiously penned manuscript entries. A couple of entries bear R. H. Stoddard's name along with the term "journal", and the book likely served as his personal journal of musings for several years. Vast collection of early writings compares favorably to known examples of R. H. Stoddard's later handwriting, and dates here coincide with Stoddard's foray into the writing profession, and references to publications such as a January 14th, 1850 edition of the "New York Tribune" corroborate author's New York location. Content is a combination of introspective thoughts, insights and reflections on a range of subjects such as poetry, philosophy, metaphysics, psychology, logic, reason, architecture, music, etc. A quite extraordinary compilation. The author weaves an intricate literary tapestry here, delving deeply into such thought provoking topics as euthanasia, death of the soul, human destiny, diary keeping, noble purity, slavery, love, prayer, flowers, god, the devil, etc. Compelling tangents include Chinese mottoes, maxims and proverbs along with vignettes such as "Kite flying in China" suggesting an interest in the Far East (Stoddard wrote of the Far East in "The Book of the East and Other Poems"). In addition to a plethora of original material, author quotes and/or references numerous historical figures throughout including close friend and fellow poet Bayard Taylor fellow poet Henry David Thoreau, theologian Martin Luther, French polymath Blaise Pascal journalist Margaret Fuller, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, historian Mark Anthony Lower, essayist Henry Theodore Tuckerman, etc.
