Title: Manuscript document signed, regarding the illegal immigration of whites to Alta California Author: Castro, Juan Place: Villa de Branciforte [now Santa Cruz, California] Publisher: Date: 1841 Description: 3 page document on a single folded sheet with printed letterhead of the 'Prefectura del Primer Distrito'. Approximately 31x20 cm. (12¼x8"). English translation provided. Interesting letter by Juan Castro, a leader of the Mexican resistance to white settlers in Northern California. Reference is made to prisoners taken and transported in the boat Guopricuana and a warning that those who were not naturalized or married to a Mexican be deported from the Republic and that care be taken to see that they do not return, further, that no foreigners be permitted to enter without proper legal credentials. An interesting document with rhetoric quite similar, though with the nations reversed, to what is espoused by some Americans today. The Castro district of San Francisco owes its name to Juan Castro. Lot Amendments Condition: Creased, some short splits at folds and light wear at edges, small hole in second page without loss of text; very good. Item number: 210361
