Title: Manuscript agreement for rental of a slave, with payment schedule Author: Woods, D.M. Place: Clarksville, Tennessee Publisher: Date: Jan. 1st, 1854 Description: 17 lines, in ink, with acknowledgement of scheduled payments and docketing on the reverse. On sheet of plain paper, 7½x8. Interesting document of renting a negro slave on the installment plan: "...For the hire of a negro man named George for the present years I promise to pay M.E. Wilcox or order the sum of One Hundred and Forty Dollars as follows, to wit: Eleven 66/100 dollars on the 31st of January Inst., and the sum of Eleven 66/100 dollars on the expiration of each month of the year thereafter until the full sum of One Hundred and forty dollars shall have been paid. And, in case of a failure to pay as above stipulated, the said Wilcox shall have his option either to take said negro away, or let him remain in my possession, and resort to such means to obtain his pay as he may elect. I also hereby obligate myself to furnish said negro with all the clothing usually given to hired negros; the clothes to be given in due time, and new when given..." On the verso are recorded 5 payments, a few for several months at a time, totalling about $105 for February 3 to October 3. Signed by Woods, which signature has been crossed out; the acknowledgment for each payment on the reverse is signed by Wilcox. Lot Amendments Condition: A small edge chip; very good.
