Manufacturer: Baccarat Description: Stately Baccarat Tantalus liquor set displayed within a fine serpentine inlay cabinet with a lift out wood carrier. The glassware is ruby hand cut to clear and consists of four shapely spirit decanters with cut mushroom stoppers, 8 inches in height plus nine matching 3 inch cordials with clear faceted stems on rayed bases. All are hand cut with double spade patterns alternating with optical oval windows. The stoppers have floral cut tops and faceted necks. One stopper has a flat chip on the bottom of the insert. The hand crafted cabinet has two color hexagonal inlay designs framed by a fastidious inlay of illusory block patterns on the top and drop front. Inlay veneer panels adorn the swing out sides and backside. Four hand turned wood spool feet loft the cabinet. Original brass hinges. The cabinet measures 11 inches tall by 12 1/2 inches wide and 9 3/4 inches deep. In open position the height is 19 inches. A removable hand carved wood carrier with a fancy gilt bronze handle and corner ornaments fits snug inside. The cabinet has a 1 1/2 inch veneer chip on the back and a few usage nicks and barely noticeable minor repairs to the drop front. Seven cordials lacking. Included is a typed letter from Kirtley E Black, president of Black, Starr & Gorham to the purchaser dated October 13, 1958, graciously acknowledging the purchase. An uncommon practice by a company president. Scarcely seen is the colored glass as generally the liquor sets are clear. Impressive craftsmanship, the finest we have seen. A wonderful example for the astute collector.
