PROVENANCE: Inscribed 'John Morton' and 'Roger Morton' (p.76) and with other pen-trials in various margins in 16th-century English hands; at the Reformation the reference to the pope was effaced on p.57. Bought by a friend of 'the eminent antiquary, E[dward] J[ohn] Carlos Esq., of the Lord Mayor's Court' (note on flyleaf), probably Sotheby's, 19 May 1851, lot 202 -- bought by Maggs, 21 September 1937. Armorial bookplate of Kennet of the Dene, presumably Edward Hilton, 1st Baron Kennet (1879-1960). CONTENT: Office of the Dead, lacking opening, beginning at the end of the first nocturn of Matins pp.1-35; Commendation of Souls pp.35-50; Prefaces pp.5-54; Gloria and Credo pp.55-6; Canon of the Mass pp.57-72; Masses of the Holy Spirit, Virgin Mary etc, votive masses pp.72-93; Requiem Mass and other masses for the dead pp.93-113; Burial service, ending imperfectly in Psalm 117:19 pp.113-20. The volume of which this consecutive sequence of quires derives was probably a Manual: the late-medieval book usually containing the occasional offices of Baptism, Marriage, Visitation of the Sick, Office of the Dead, Commendation of Souls, and Burial service, often also with the Canon of the Mass, Wedding and Funeral Masses, and votive masses. Such books are usually quite plain in appearance. In its present form it concerns primarily the offices relating to the dead. Such a book could be used by a parish priest, but the text includes references to two clerics and the whole convent (p.113), suggesting a monastic or collegiate setting.
