Title: Manual of the Corporation of the City of San Francisco containing A Map of The City; The Declaration of Independence; The Constitution of The United States; The Constitution of The State of California; The Charters of the City; The Revised Ordinances; The General Repealing Ordinances; The Ordinances still in force, and certain laws relating particularly to the City of San Francisco. Published by Authority Author: Place: San Francisco Publisher: G.K. Fitch & Co., Printers Date: 1852 Description: xlix, xvi, 261 pp. With two folding lithographed maps, of San Francisco and of the northern Peninsula. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (8¾x5½), original sheep, spine lettered in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco label on each cover reading "Ald. James Van Ness, 8th Ward, San Francisco." Presentation copy to James Van Ness, after whom one of the major San Francisco boulevards is named, with his ornate ownership signature on front free endpaper, and an inscription to him on tits verso: "Ald. James Van Ness, 8th Ward, Compliments of E.A. Edgerton." Edgerton was the city clerk. The two maps are quite significant, and scarce. They are: "Map of San Francisco" (23x28.7 cm, on light blue paper); and "Map of the Northern Portion of San Francisco County Compiled from Surveys June 1st 1852 by Clement Humphreys County Surveyor, January 1853" (40.5x50 cm). The first is a detailed street map, with a list of ten important locations, and a separate list of churches. The second is an unusual map of San Francisco to the Pacific, with east at the top, showing everything north of Point San Bruno. Warren Heckrotte queries "Is the above map a second issue given date 1853 and date on book of 1852? The map does not give any man-made details in the city except for line of Market Street. The city charter boundaries of 1850 and 1851 are shown. The surrounding Ranchos are shown." In addition, there is the Government Reserve with the Presidio, Mission Dolores (simply called Mission), the San Jose Road, and, in the west, Great Sand Bank and Laguna La Mercede. The two maps were supplied to the book at some time, and were never bound in, nor is there evidence that any maps were bound in. Provenance: Harrison, San Francisco Book Fair, 2/95 References: Cowan II, p 359. Greenwood 348. Rocq 11444. Howes S 70. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and edges rubbed, joints cracked or cracking; top corners of 1st 10 leaves darkened from ink or smoke; else very good, the maps fine or nearly so. Item number: 265767
