Beschreibung:

Paper-bound journal, 8pp, containing the song "Major John Andre's Arrest." The controversial song recounts Major John Andre's life and his plot with Benedict Arnold against the Continental Army. It ends lamenting his death, insisting that Arnold should have been in his place. John Andre (1750-1780) was a well-educated, well-beloved member of society. He was a major in the British Army and also the head of the British Secret Service during the American Revolution. He, along with Benedict Arnold's wife, convinced Arnold to betray the United States and intentionally surrender a pivotal fort at West Point. Before the plot could be executed, three American soldiers captured him en route to deliver papers to the British Army. The Continental Army hanged him as a spy. Disheartened, Alexander Hamilton wrote, "Never perhaps did any man suffer death with more justice, or deserve it less." Condition: Some toning of the paper and fragile binding. Minor flaking, a center fold, and some ink smudges.
