Mahatma Gandi (1869-1948) - Letter - a postcard written by Gandhi in July 1944, notable for containing a recollection of his teachings and the 'tale of Buddha'. The postcard is addressed to the wife of Gandhi's personal Doctor and friend Dr Kanuga, and is notable as it contains two separate notes, and reads: Panchgani 13-07-44 Dear Sister, I read your letter. It contains only sad news. I recall the tale of Buddha. He said that “I tell you to bring some mustard seeds from the house in which no death has occurred.” But can anyone find such home? And we will have the destination as everyone will have. Blessings from Bapu. The important portion was about to miss. In the Baa [grandmother]’s memorial, our people went with the many Lakhpati (Rich persons having millions of rupees). There is nothing wrong happened in it. How can we refuse what he gives? We should not have hatred for it. What to tell more. Bapu. Mrs. Nandubahen, Dr. Kanuga Ahmedabad Written in blue ink, on both sides, the address also in Gandhi's hand. 9cm x 14cm, approx. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.
