Engraved plan of a canalisation project for Rome on a full Royal sheet, 415 x 550mm (engraving 405 x 539mm). Title set in a banner along upper margin, dedication to pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese), dedicatee's arms, inset legends and profile plans of the intended works, compass rose, scalebar. (Trimmed to plate mark along upper edge with some small losses, narrow margins with occasional tears not affecting plate mark, some discolouration and spotting.) A FASCINATING SERIES OF THREE PLANS FOR THE PROPOSED PROJECT FOR THE CANALISATION OF THE TIBER. The Tiber burst its banks in 1598, inspiring the architect, Giovanni Pietro Ferreri, to prospose a plan of canalisation for Rome to Clement VIII, Ippolito Aldobrandini. The plan records this meeting, which took place at the Belvedere on 22 February, 1599. Ferreri presented Clement VIII with this design and a model of the propsed works. It would appear from the dedication, which is to pope Paul V, that Clement VIII did not undertake Ferreri's plans. This is an unusual record of a canalisation project conceived on a grand scale but unexecuted; the physical and topographical changes to the surrounding landscape would have been considerable.
