Beschreibung:

Macrobius (Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius.) OPERA. ACCEDUNT INTEGRAE ISACII PONTANI, JOH. MEURSII, JACOBI GRONOVII NOTAE & ANIMADVERSIONES. London: T. Dring and C. Harper, 1694. 8vo (7.5" x 4.5".) [32], 451, [3], 459-472, 465-480, 489-491, [57] pp. (complete despite errors in pagination.) With initial imprimatur leaf, additional engraved title, and title printed in red and black. Includes in-text woodcuts. Bound in full 20th c. calf with label, red page-ends, endpapers renewed. Leaf S1 with tissue repair (recto/verso, along inner portion), else a generally clean and Very Good example. ********************************************** The first edition to be printed in England. "This edition ranks among the octavo Variorum Classics, as the best of its author. Two valuable manuscripts (on the Somnium Scipionis ) were consulted, and the entire notes of Pontanus and Meursius are a rich harvest of illustration in addition of those of its distinguished editor" (Dibdin.) The work also contains several woodcuts including a simple version of Macrobius' world map which was the basis of world geography until exploration would prove differently. [Dibdin II, 221; ESTC R36883; Wing M229; Ebert 12721; Lowndes 1447
