Machairodus giganteus Late Miocene Central Asia Machairodus giganteus was the largest saber-toothed cat to have ever lived. Machairodus, Greek for "knife tooth," displayed serrated edges on its canine teeth that were worn down in the first few years of life. These pack hunters roamed through Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, with the best preserved skulls having been found in Asia. This particular specimen, found in the late 1990's, is an exceptional example. It is a nearly perfect specimen with pristine, sharp serrations still visible on its cutting edges.
