MacARTHUR, DOUGLAS, Gen. (1880-1964). Photograph identification card signed ("Douglas MacArthur"), n.p., n.d. [circa 1918]. 38 x 27 mm. (1½ x 1 1/8 in.), signature faded, irregularly cut and pasted within cardboard identification folder . A shoulder-length photo (cut from a group shot) of MacArthur, signed on the opposite identification flap. "This is MacArthur's actual identification card, which he carried in the front lines in World War I as colonel, and shortly thereafter as brigadier general. The superb strategist of the Pacific in World War II was appointed supreme commander of the Allied occupation forces in Japan, inaugurating a new constitution with liberal features, land redistribution, and demilitarization. MacArthur was greatly decorated for bravery - at times directly facing enemy lines. Note at lower right reads: 'Upon relief from duty with the A.E.F. the holder must turn in this card to the C.O. at the point of embarkation.' Obviously MacArthur did not do this. Since he was the only one to go through West Point without a single demerit, this may be the first thing he ever did wrong. This is probably the only identification card of a major military figure in private hands. A magnificent, vicarious war item. (The card came from the estate of MacArthur's first wife)"--W.M.
