All the major cities of Europe sought to imitate the achievements of London. London's public transport system was the best in the world and many visits to London were made by overseas engineers with instructions to prepare recommendations. The author of the first work was the chief engineer of the government department of Bridges and Roads in charge of the Service des Chemins de Fer Municipaux; the work describes the Metropolitan, Metropolitan District, North London, East London, Metropolitan and St. John's Wood, Hammersmith and City, West London Extension, Metropolitan Extension and the inner suburban services of the main lines. The German author of the second visited England and Scotland and the text was originally published in German and then translated into French for the benefit of Belgian and French legislators and railway administrators. Topics covered include railway economics and technical aspects, London passenger stations, goods and coal depots and underground railways, locomotives and rolling stock, secondary lines, passenger and goods traffic and the Railway Clearing House. The author of the last item was a civil engineer and former principal engineer-inspector of a French railway company. He records that in Paris the railway played only a secondary role whilst, in London, it played a major one.
