FIRST EDITION of Luther's catechism in the Delaware language. The Swedish missionary Johan Companius resided among the Delaware tribe from 1643 to 1648. His translation, or paraphrase, of Luther's shorter catechism, with a short vocaubulary of the Delaware language, was published after his death by order of Charles XI, "expressly for the conversion of the American heathen" (Church). 500 copies were sent to America, all bound in calf stamped with the royal arms. The map of New Sweden, which appears here in the first state with the shorter title, was reprinted with some minor alterations by Campanius' grandson Thomas Campanius for his history of New Sweden (Stockholm 1702).
