LUTHER, Martin (1483-1546). Lutheri catechismus fwersatt pa American-Virginiske Sprket. - Vocabulario Barbaro-Virgineorum . Translation from Swedish into Delaware by Johan Campanius (1601-1683). Additional engraved title, letterpress title printed in red and black, part 2 separately titled but continuously paginated, text in Swedish in gothic type, and in Delaware in italic and roman types, FOLDING ENGRAVED MAP OF NEW SWEDEN by the translator's grandson Thomas Campanius after P. Lindstrm, woodcut title devices, head- and tailpieces and initials. (Marginal browning to first and last leaves from acidic glue used for pastedowns, folding map with neatly repaired small tear at guard.) Publisher's binding of speckled calf, crowned cipher of Charles XI of Sweden gilt blocked at center of covers, smaller cipher repeated in spine compartments (extremities rubbed). Provenance : several 19th-century Swedish ms. notes on the edition on front free endpaper; Aksel Anderson (signature on front pastedown, sale, 26 October, 1896). FIRST EDITION of Luther's catechism in the Delaware language. The Swedish missionary Johan Companius resided among the Delaware tribe from 1643 to 1648. His translation, or paraphrase, of Luther's shorter catechism, with a short vocaubulary of the Delaware language, was published after his death by order of Charles XI, "expressly for the conversion of the American heathen" (Church). 500 copies were sent to America, all bound in calf stamped with the royal arms. The map of New Sweden, which appears here in the first state with the shorter title, was reprinted with some minor alterations by Campanius' grandson Thomas Campanius for his history of New Sweden (Stockholm 1702).
