Luke Foxe (or Fox) (1586-1635) North-West Fox, Fox from the North-west passage... By Captaine Luke Foxe of Kingstone upon Hull, Capt. and Pylot for the Voyage, in his Majesties Pinnace the Charles. London: printed by B.Alsop and Thomas Fawcet, 1635. 4° (190 x 143mm). Woodcut frontispiece, folding circumpolar map, full-page woodcut map on Ff1, with cancel leaf u2.3 inserted between V2 and V3 but paginated '172, 170, 171'. (Folding map in lithographic facsimile, numerous neat marginal repairs, K1-4 and N4 with slight loss to pagination.) Contemporary speckled sheep (neatly rebacked to style). Provenance : Roger Young (inscription on verso of frontispiece, dated 1687); Jno.Young (inscription on final leaf); Prickle or Prickell (signatures on M3 verso); sale: Bonham's 24 June 1997 lot 229 First edition of 'One of the most interesting and important documents in the history of Arctic explorations' (Church). 'An account of the author's attempt to find the Northwest Passage, in which he explored the western part of Hudson Bay. He left England May 5, 1631, and returned on October 31st of the same year.
