LUI SHOU KWAN (LÜ SHOUKUN, 1919-1975)
Zen
LUI SHOU KWAN (LÜ SHOUKUN, 1919-1975) Zen Scroll, mounted and framed Ink and colour on paper 43 X 59 cm. (16 7/8 x 23 1/4 in.) Executed in 1971 Close to Mainland China but culturally distinct, Hong Kong provided a unique backdrop for the development of new ink movements as early as the 1960s. The first generation of new ink artists in Hong Kong were exposed to both Chinese and western artistic styles and theories and thus created diverse visual styles and techniques. Lui Shou Kwan had solid foundations in traditional ink brushwork, but chose to develop his own style, unique and carefree, to fuse abstraction with spirituality. In this way, Lui created lyrical sketches of Hong Kong (Lot 742) and a series of abstract Zen paintings (Lots 704, 740 and 743) inspired by Zen Buddhism and the lotus flower.
