Della natura delle cose libri sei , translated from the Latin by Alessandro Marchetti, Amsterdam [i.e. Paris]: a spese dell'editore, 1754. 2 volumes, 8° (224 x 145mm.), 2 engraved frontispieces and titles by Lemire after Eisen, 6 engraved plates after Cochin and Le Lorrain, 7 headpieces after Cochin and Eisen and 5 tailpieces after Cochin, Eisen and Vassé (occasional light spotting, stronger to a few leaves), contemporary French red morocco gilt, sides decorated with a wide dentelle border of gilt fleurons, flat spine, each compartment with floral central motif and foliate cornerpieces, two brown morocco lettering-pieces, gilt edges (gilt on spine of vol. I faded, three small flaws in rear cover of vol. II, lightly rubbed). Provenance: Frank Linsly James (bookplate). This book "became the model for the sumptuous rococo volumes of the ensuing twenty-five years. Handsomely printed on large paper with headpieces, and tailpieces by leading artists, it is encountered more often in contemporary bindings of decorated morocco ... than almost any other work of the time" (Ray).
