LOWE, Hudson, Sir (1769-1844) -- A Catalogue of the Valuable Library of a Gentleman; comprising an extensive collection of Books in all classes of Literature, including many specimens of Printing of the XVth and XVIth centuries, of Considerable Rarity... Apparently unrecorded sale catalogue, there is no copy of it in the British Library. Sir Hudson Lowe's name is stated in a contemporary manuscript note on the title page. He was lieutenant-general and governor of St. Helena during Napoleon's captivity there 1815-1821. The section "History and Biography" contains under the heading "Napoleon" no less than 29 works concerning him (lots 1,677-1,705), as well as eight works under "Bonaparte" (lots 1,283-1,290); lot 1,023 lists Barne's "Tour through St. Helena," 1817. DNB expressly states that Lowe owned "a fine and extensive library."
