LOWE, Hudson, Sir (1769-1844) -- A Catalogue of the Valuable Library of a Gentleman; comprising an extensive collection of Books in all classes of Literature, including many specimens of Printing of the XVth and XVIth centuries, of Considerable Rarity... London: Wheatley and Adlard, 23 February, 1829. 8 o (228 x 148 mm). (A few contemporary notes.) Self wrappers, stabbed as issued, uncut; cloth folding case. Apparently unrecorded sale catalogue, there is no copy of it in the British Library. Sir Hudson Lowe's name is stated in a contemporary manuscript note on the title page. He was lieutenant-general and governor of St. Helena during Napoleon's captivity there 1815-1821. The section "History and Biography" contains under the heading "Napoleon" no less than 29 works concerning him (lots 1,677-1,705), as well as eight works under "Bonaparte" (lots 1,283-1,290); lot 1,023 lists Barne's "Tour through St. Helena," 1817. DNB expressly states that Lowe owned "a fine and extensive library."
