LOVE & DEATH: A STUDY in CENSORSHIP Author: Legman, Gershon Place: NY Publisher: Breaking Point Press Date: 1949 Description: 95pp. 8vo. Red wrappers. First Edition. A very good or better copy with spine cocked and sunned, light soiling, page edges tanned. Love & Death, Gershon Legman's self-published manifesto about American media violence, includes a chapter titled "Not for Children" that's probably the most acrimonious piece of anti-comics invective ever published. Legman's book pre-dates both Wertham's Seduction of the Innocent and Wagner's Parade of Pleasure by five years, and his primary focus is the hypocrisy, as he saw it, of America's embrace of fantasy violence and fear of healthy eroticism ("Sex - the opposite of death - may or may not save us. But we cannot hold back the flood with institutionalized amok"). Legman has special contempt for what he calls the "sex-horror" or "horror-squinkie" comics (Robert Crumb would borrow Legman's coinage years later: the tagline of Zap Comix #1 is "Zap Comics are Squinky Comics!"). Consignments Accepted for PBA's Next Comic Book Auction. Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Code, Original Art, Interesting Ephemera Sought. Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com for details. PBA COMICS March 26th Comic Book Sale catalogues available. Supplies Limited. Softcover catalogue limited to 200 copies ($45 + $5 postage/handling). Hardcover limited to 26 lettered copies, dust jacket, special limitation plate ($150). Contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Lot Amendments Condition: Item number: 312669
