[Washington, D.C.], 16 January 1804. 8° (210 x 127 mm). Disbound, early manuscript docket on cover; blue cloth slipcase. FIRST EDITION. Jefferson’s message occupies the first 1 ¼ pages. Its concise text details the particulars of the entrance into the territory by Governor Claiborne and General Wilkinson. He concludes: “On this important acquisition, so favorable to the immediate interests of our Western citizens, so auspicious to the peace and security of the nation in general, which adds to our country territories so extensive and fertile, and to our citizens new brethren to partake of the blessings of freedom and self-government, I offer to Congress and our country my sincere congratulations.” The message includes a proclamation and address by Claiborne, first American governor of Louisiana.
