LOUIS XVI (1754-1793, King of France) and MARIE ANTOINETTE (1755-1793, Queen of France). Woodcut skull-and-crossbones ornaments at head of first page. (Edges lightly browned, a few spots, skillful repairs on folds.) Unbound as issued, modern box. FIRST EDITION. A RARE, REVOLUTION-PERIOD PAMPHLET CALLING FOR THE EXECUTION OF LOUIS XVI AND MARIE-ANTOINETTE. The anonymous pamphlet--which is merely signed on the first page 'Par un Commissaire National' and on the last 'Par un vrai Républicain, vrai Patriote, vrai sans-Culotte'--opens with a denouncement of the 'Roi scélérat et stupide' and the 'Reine scélérat et perverse', for their folly, error and tyrannical conduct. Castigating the King and Queen for their vanity and debauchery, the author decries their behaviour as an insult to the honour of France, and compares it with that of Charlemagne, François I, Charles V and other previous monarchs ('toujours chers au souvenir de la posterité'), who have brought glory to the throne. He concludes with an admonition to the royalists of the Convention nationale that the people will no longer tolerate their actions, and that if they continue upon the same path they will meet the same fate as their master, the King. Following the incarceration of the King and Queen after the Revolution, the Convention nationale decreed on 3 December 1792 that Louis XVI should be tried and the trial began on 26 December 1792; it ended in the adoption of the death penalty, and Louis was guillotined on 21 January 1793.
