Beschreibung:

LOUIS XV (1710-1774). Le Sacré de Louis XV ... dans l'eglise de Reims, le Dimanche XXV Octobre, MDCCXXII . [Paris: 1723?]. Large broadsheets (632 x 478mm). Engraved throughout on rectos only: title, 4 preliminaries, 9 double-page plates on guards, descriptions of the plates on 28ll. each within an elaborate border, some with cartouche, 30 engraved costume plates, double-page table, and one leaf list of contributing artists, by Audran, Beauvais, Cochin, Dupuis, Tardieu, Edelinck, Drevet, Haussard, Petit, d'Ulin and others. (A few spots on title, two double-page plates slightly split along fold, some marginal soiling and staining.) Original gilt-blocked dark blue morocco over thick pasteboard by Padeloup le Jeune, covers decorated with a wide border of elaborate foliate and floral ornament composed from the repeated impressions of four large plaques, arms of Louis XV at centre, spine compartments with small tools surrounding the royal cipher, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (some scuff marks, extremities rubbed). A CELEBRATED FRENCH FêTE-BOOK IN A BINDING SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THE EDITION BY ANTOINE-MICHEL PADELOUP LE JEUNE. Drawing on the decorative scheme of the engraved borders by d'Ulin, Perrot and Simmoneau, Padeloup's binding, of which there are some twenty known examples, forms a stylistic unity with the book itself. In some copies, though not the present one, the binder's engraved ticket is added to the list of collaborating artists. For a detailed study of these 'reliures de série,' see P. Cullot Sur quelques reliures d'époque à décor doré du Sacre de Louis XV (Cahiers de Mariemont I, 1970). Brunet V, 19 ('recherché à cause de belles planches'); Cohen/De Ricci 917; Vinet p. 57.
