LOUIS XIV. King of France -- Mdailles sur les principaux vnements du rgne de Louis Le Grand avec des explications historiques , Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1702. 2, engraved throughout, frontispiece by Simonneau after Coypel, 286 plates with engraved borders depicting medals, the last 3 with the Table des matires (margin of last 10 plates slightly waterstained, occasional light browning), contemporary French olive morocco, triple fillet on both covers, with the central arms of Louis XIV [Olivier 2494 no. 7], spine gilt in seven compartments, six gilt with an interlaced L , gilt inner dentelles (slightly rubbed, upper quarter slightly darkened), g.e. Provenance : early distinct inscription, dated 1717; Rev. S. Halliday, inscription; Admiral Benjamin William Page bookplate with extensive inscriptions on first few leaves; Panfield Rectory. FIRST EDITION IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY FRENCH OLIVE-MOROCCO BINDING, WITH THE ARMS OF LOUIS XIV. The present copy is, as usual, without the preface, which was cancelled soon after the publication due to its criticisms of Louis XIV. According to a handwritten note by Admiral Page the book "is said to be taken out of the Royal Library at Paris in 1793". Copies in olive-morocco appear to be rarer; the regular publisher's binding is red morocco. Cohen-de-Ricci 695.
