Louis Maurer immigrated to New York from Germany at 19, establishing himself as a lithographer. He worked for Currier and Ives and later founded his own firm, Maurer & Heppenheimer. He lived at 404 West 43rd Street in Hell's Kitchen from 1868 until his death in 1932. His son, the modernist painter Alfred Maurer, lived in a small room on the top floor of the house. C
