LOUIS CYLKOW (1877-1934) LE PANTALON ROUGE. 24 3/4x35 inches. Condition A: minor time-staining at edges; vertical fold. Louis Cylkow was a painter who studied in Krakow and then settled in Paris. This, his only known foray into the poster world, is executed in a vivid and humorous caricature style that is distinctly different from his landscape paintings. The production being advertised was one in a string of popular and unmemorable operettas. One of the co-writers, Gabriel Montoya, specialized in writing librettos for musical revues that were meant to entertain the middle class until the next production. It can only be assumed that the plot involved the French Army, whose uniform consisted of red pants right up through the First World War.
