Continuing the concept of a basic road/competition car for the enthusiast established successfully by the MkVI, Lotus's most enduring model - the Seven - arrived in 1957 and, much developed and modified, continues in production today courtesy of Caterham Cars, which acquired the rights to the design in 1973. The S1 established the basic pattern - tubular spaceframe chassis, uncomplicated open bodywork, wishbone IFS, live rear axle - that would characterise all four Series. A variety of engines was available right from the start. Chapman's design spawned a host of imitations produced by kit car manufacturers and private individuals alike, this 'child's car' version being the work of Tony Gillett, who constructed it in his workshop for the children of a client. Stored in a warehouse for many years, the car was totally restored, both cosmetically and mechanically, in 2005 by the current owner. The carbon-fibre dashboard was made by Duchâtelet, who also made the gear shifter. Other noteworthy features include a single-cylinder, fan-cooled engine (mounted at the rear) and adjustable pedals for different size drivers. An ideal entry, if accepted, for the 2014 'Little Big Mans' event. There are no documents with this Lot.
