LOTTERY , A history of the Lottery in England, from the earliest times , title printed in red and black, mezzotint frontispiece 'The Lottery Contrast' by Dighton dated 1794, EXTRA - ILLUSTRATED with circa 278 original tickets, adverts, lottery puffs, bills, receipts, tipped-in, mounted or inset, manuscript list of illustrations, contemporary tan half-morocco, t.e.g. (joints rubbed, foot of upper joint split and worn), folio, 17 x 12.4 in. [43 x 31 cm.] approx., Privately Printed and Illustrated, Kensington [London] 1882 The circa 278 extra - illustrations include: Engraved plate by Cole 'The Representation of the Drawing of the State Lottery at Guildhall 1751', a note states that the British Museum copy of this plate is a later, 1763, reprint. Two envelopes franked by Bish, the Lottery contractor. Autograph letter signed by Bish to the holder of ticket 8221 winning £20,000. Manuscript assignment to certain rights in the State Lottery of 1768 to Samuel Wilson signed by Thomas Congreve 'one of the managers of the State Lottery of 1768', with wax seal. 99 lottery handbills, many by Cruikshank, illustrating Ballooning, Napoleon, Costume, etc. A collection of over 20 lottery tickets dating from 1698-1805 full-page original architectural scale drawing of the facade of the State Lottery Office at no. 3 Cockspur Street, by [the architect?] C[?] Baker 1781. Full-page 'Rare Half penny Lottery sheet of Costume 1792'. Loosely inserted very rare pamphlet by Thomas Neale [Great Recoinage] The best way of Disposing of Hammer'd Money and Plate, as well for the Advantage of the Owners thereof...By way of Lottery...Printed Feb. 4. 1696/7. Reprinted, with Amendments, Feb. 20. 1696/7. And now Printed again, March 18. 1696/7. T.N. Many of the illustrations are from the Fillingham, Basil Jupp and George Daniel Collections.
