Lot consists of: Four swords. (A) 1845 dated Ames Light Artillery 1840 pattern. Scarce, early Mexican War date. US / JH inspector marks obverse ricasso. Ames firm address on reverse. First type scabbard. CONDITION: Very good. Blade has good edge and point, but grey with dark grey overall. Some shallow pitting near tip. Hilt excellent with undisturbed pommel, age patina, original full leather and wire. (B) Import light cavalry saber. Blade 1-1/4" wide at guard. Three narrow fullers starting 7" from guard. Brass hilt with three branch guard, narrow counterguard, bird's head pommel with short capstan. Contoured and grooved wood grip. CONDITION: Very good. Blade dark grey and caramel brown, smooth metal, good edge and point, one small spot of raised brown surface rust obverse, 9" from tip. (C) 1872 staff and field. Standard configuration. CONDITION: Fair to poor. Etching visible, but grey blade. Steel scabbard mostly brown. Grip wrap shows wear. Hilt dark with some play. (D) 1840 period eagle pommel with narrow spadroon blade. Blade blued for lower third with point etched and gilt washed floral and military motifs. Scrolling counterguard with arms display. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Blade is bright with minor grey spotting at upper end. Blue and gilt is bright. Cylindrical bone grip is excellent. Hilt has slight play. Counter brass reddish in tone. Pommel and knuckleguard more neutral dark brass. Scabbard is very good, black leather with age toned brass mounts. A good group of swords. The 1845 date Ames is particularly hard to come by and is in good shape. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
