Lot consists of: four swords with scabbards. (A) Horstmann marked US Cavalry officer saber. 1860 style hilt and blade, though a tad narrower. This is not as narrow as a standard 1872 cavalry officer's and narrow blades are known among wartime makers and dealers like Sauerbier. The gilt hilt has excellent, deeply contoured sharkskin wrapped grips with triple wire binding, and floral cast decoration to the branches inside and out, and a palmette cast at the inner top of the counterguard. Brass inset "Proved" disk at obverse ricasso, with floral scrolls, American eagle with motto ribbon above. Reverse ricasso etched with "Horstmann / Philadelphia" in block letters in clipped-corner rectangular panel, entwined US. Scabbard browned with narrow, gilt brass mounts. CONDITION: Very good. Blade smooth with good edge and point, muted silver with some greying and scattered grey spots. Etching very visible. Hilt with lots of bright gilt, but rubbed pommel and high spots. Scabbard with excellent color. Throat shows gilt. Other mounts subdued. (B) 'P' guard artillery style saber with black wire-bound grips. Plated hilt and blade. CONDITION: Very good. Bright blade with Weyersberg firm name at ricasso. Freckling to plate on pommel and backstrap. Scabbard good. European single ring and bar on upper mount. (C) Light artillery style saber with brass reverse 'P' guard and 1902 style contoured wood grips. Unetched plated blade. Steel scabbard with brass drag, long frog hook on petal base at throat. CONDITION Good. Mellow, age patina to brass. Grip very good. Speckling to plating on blade revealing brown at tip and small places along edge and a couple of larger spots at the guard. Scabbard is dark. (D) Peterson-75 style non-regulation officer's sword of undetermined age. Steel scabbard and hilt with wire-bound sharkskin grip. Cut-out American eagle in guard with E Pluribus Unum rbbon overhead and "US" underneath. Blade etched "Iron Proof" on back edge, otherwise no maker or dealer marks, obverse etched with central American eagle and ribbon, reverse with "U.S." CONDITION: Good. Blade shows some small grey spots. Hilt and scabbard plated and showing losses to backstrap, pommel, and scabbard overall showing brown underneath.
